Fall family photo shoot season is rocking and rolling. It’s been a lot of work, and a lot of fun. This year I have worked with a lot of families who are visiting from out of town and want NYC vacation photography. It’s been great to meet so many nice people from all over the world.
If you ask me (and I know you didn’t!), NYC skyline family photography is the ultimate vacation souvenir.
Of course, many people want to take advantage of the fall foliage, and classic Manhattan locations by doing a Central Park family shoot. However, some of the best views of the Manhattan skyline require you to look beyond Central Park. I love that NYC provides so many incredible locations for shoots. (You can see a different gorgeous view of Manhattan in this family shoot.)
NYC Vacation Photography
The majority of my clients are New Yorkers, but I do have a healthy dose of out of towners as well. This was a three-generation trip, for this family visiting from Park City, and I was very glad to help them document their time here. They had a great itinerary of theatre, sightseeing and dining, why not photograph some of their time in the city?
One of my favorite things about being a family photographer is chatting with clients beforehand and planning the perfect shoot with them. Many people looking for NYC vacation photography have never been to New York City beforehand and, understandably, aren’t sure of the best locations for family shoots. I’m happy to do the planning!
This fabulous family wanted city views – one of my favorite settings! I love the iconic NYC skyline in the background here. A great bonus of skyline photography is no fall foliage is required: this location looks gorgeous year round.
Choosing the right location, and the right time of day for that particular spot is so important, and I’m happy to help.
NYC Skyline Family Photography
It drizzled slightly at the beginning of our shoot, but for the most part Mother Nature cooperated beautifully. Mid October is usually a great time for family photography in NYC, and we don’t have to rely too heavily on my cold weather photography tips to get great results.
I like how you can see the light changing throughout this family session, as it got later in the day.
These cute siblings were more than happy to do some “crazier” photos, and then also able to buckle down and get serious for the more formal family portraits.
As I wrote in my 15 Family Photo Shoot Tips that I like to do a mix of energetic candid images, and posed portraits. Here are some great examples of how its done.
Of course we have to do some classic group portraits, but I also really love capturing the different dynamics within the family. It’s great to celebrate the different relationships within the family members.
Some romance by the water. A family shoot is also an excuse for a few moments of child-free merriment.
No children tumbled into the water in the making of this family shoot.
A little dancer and her doting dad. I shrieked when I opened this photo on my computer after the shoot.
A marvelous mother son moment.
The whole gang together again. I love the boat in the background.
A tranquil moment for the grandparents and their grandchildren. How fabulous to all go on a trip together!
Not pictured: overzealous photographer hanging over the water to get the shot above.
What to Wear for a Family Shoot
Didn’t this family nail it with their outfits? Everyone looks great, and color coordinated without being too matchy.
For some families this comes easily, and for others its a bit more of a challenge. I always send my clients a What to Wear Guide before the shoot with some tips and inspiration photos. You are also welcome to send me some photos of possible outfits before the shoot, so we can discuss.
Some people send me photos from the dressing room while they are shopping!
That said, I didn’t hear a peep from this family before their shoot, so all credit goes to them for this gorgeous color palate. They did a stellar job of mixing neutrals with coordinating pops of color.
Bravo!
The stuff holiday cards are made of.
A huge thank you to this wonderful family for a magical 45 minutes together.
I hope you always have fantastic memories of your visit to NYC.
Thank you for letting me be a brief part of your family trip!
