Spring is just a few weeks away, which means outdoor family photo shoot season will return with gusto.
I just can’t wait!
I’ve had a great time doing outdoor family shoots this winter, but won’t object to some warmer weather.
Here’s a family shoot from this winter, it was freezing but we had a terrific time.
Manhattan skyline family photos just might be my new favorite. It’s sort of ironic that some of the best photos of Manhattan are taken outside of the city.
The shoot itself was great, and the backstory is so sweet too: this kind husband planned the shoot as a surprise anniversary present for his wife.
It was a major hit, and so thoughtful!
The three of us did a family shoot together the year prior to this shoot, so when the anniversary was approaching, the husband contacted me and we arranged the whole thing.
The lovely couple had gotten married at this location several years before; the wedding was beautiful but it snowed hard on their big day and they didn’t have the Manhattan views they had envisioned.
Our goal for the shoot was to get some great family photos featuring the wedding views they missed out on.
How wonderful to return to your wedding venue years later, with your young child in tow!
It was great to see them again, and so fun to be a part of this special project.
It was such an honor to be included!
I suppose it’s a bit corny to say, but I really do love working with my clients again and again, watching their children grow, and documenting important events in their lives.
Tips for Planning a Surprise Photo Shoot
Now, let’s be real: a photo shoot is not necessarily something you always want sprung on you at the last minute, with no warning.
(For example, I wouldn’t say I’m looking particularly “camera ready” as a I sit at my computer typing this….).
That’s why I suggest for surprise shoots, there are a few – totally optional! – additional moves you can consider as well:
• If you tell your wife/girlfriend/mom/sister about the shoot the morning-of, tell her you ALSO booked her a pre-shoot blowout, just in case she wants some pampering beforehand too. (Just make sure you actually do it in advance, some of those places book out early.)
• Or make a reservation at a favorite restaurant so you know your loved ones will wear an outfit they feel good in.
• Or just let them know a few days in advance!
I don’t know exactly how these two coordinated their surprise shoot, but I can tell you that the whole thing went off without a hitch.

Well that move above is a new a new one: I’ve written before about how I love a “toddler toss” by mom or dad, but here’s this little guy’s dad jumping right over him.
We couldn’t stop laughing!
I love the relaxed fun here.
Say what you want about colder days, but they offer the advantage of fewer crowds. Although I did remove a few people from the background of some of these.
I love these areas of New Jersey, and am always delighted when I have the opportunity to work as a Hudson County family photographer.
It is so amazing seeing how much bigger this handsome little fellow got in the last year.
I can’t believe how much he’s grown up!
I always like my clients to feel relaxed and prepared before a shoot. Please feel free to read my 15 family photo shoot tips for some information on how to prepare for your shoot. Let me know if you have any questions!
Before an outdoor shoot in the winter, I always send my client my cold weather photography tips.
With these tips in mind, I am able to work outdoors year-round, while keeping everyone’s comfort and safety the #1 priority.
Thanks for a great evening, you three!
I hope this was an anniversary to remember!
